'During my last solo show, I created three sculptures by compressing jute threads in a wooden mould. Feeling there was potential to extend the method to other materials, I used it to turn a four meter length of jute yarn into a three dimensional block. The texture of the folds created by this process opened up further possibilities, and I began experimenting with newspaper sculptures. Under pressure, the rolled-up newspapers begin to resemble a miniature wall made of cement or unevenly cut stone. I find the play between dimensions, materials and textures set off by these sculptures very exciting.Whenever I’m on the road, I closely observe gutters, canal walls, light plaster patches on grey cement, trickles of rust from drainpipes, peeling paint. I try to create echoes of these objects and surfaces in my work. I first attempted it in art school a decade ago, in media like painting and photography, with unsatisfactory results. The concern has resurfaced in my recent sculpture, and I believe these experiments express it in more mature form.'

Site-specific wall painting, gouache on plaster, 200 x 290 cm.The design on the wall, which will be on view for approximately as long as it took to be completed, is inspired by the cracked and fractured surfaces that make up a substantial part of the daily visual experience of India. The connection is made explicit through a digital print of a similar illusionistic pattern superimposed on a photograph of an actual wall.I had transferred one of my drawings, making it look like the wall was carved. In photoshop, I controlled the light and dark shades, and the process led to my actual painting the image onto my wall.

Untitled I, 2010, natural and dyed jute, gateway paper and paint on canvas, 168 x 221 cm.My paintings are produced by a complicated method involving drawing on paper; scanning and digitally manipulating the drawn images; projecting and tracing these onto fabric stretched over canvas; and replicating the drawings as patterns on jute through a painstaking removal of threads. Many viewers assume the I use some form of embroidery to create patterns on cloth, but in fact I isolate the design within the fabric by cutting select threads. Since I want to keep the overlayer in a single piece, I can only snip threads running in one direction, either horizontal or vertical.
