i'm an ARTIST i'm a CURATORillysustainArt.org forms part of the broader illy SustainArt project created to deepen the company's involvement in
contemporary art.
According to the belief that art is good to everyone, the illy SustainArt project brings together illy's two leading values - ethics
and aesthetics.
In line with illycaffè's long engagement to the arts and the desire to support art communities worldwide, in recent years, the
illy sustainArt project developed a variety of different collaborations in order to support worldwide artists. Launched at the
52nd International Art Exhibition in Venice, it cooperated with IILA (Italo-Latin American Institute), an international body
commissioned by the Biennale since 1972, to organise the participation of Latin-American artists, with their own pavilion, in
Venice's International Art Exhibitions.
During the last few years, illy SustainArt's initial commitment has materialised and developed in various events which have
seen in 2007 - through the collaboration with Turin-based International Art Fair, Artissima - the opportunity for a number of
the Fair’s curators, and namely Meskerem Assegued, Mariangela Mendez Prencke and Suman Gopinath, to undertake a
joint project for organising the systematic promotion of art events and activities in and out of their countries of origin,
especially with a view to discovering new talents. In 2008/2009 the illy sustainArt prize was launched in collaboration with
the International Contemporary Arts Fair, ARCO, in Madrid and it was dedicated to Brazilian and Indian artists respectively.
The winner of the first edition of the illy SustainArt prize, chosen by an international panel of judges headed by Berta Sichel,
director of the audiovisual department of the Reina Sofia Museum, was Matheus Rocha Pitta. The winner of the 2009 edition
was Avinash Veeraraghavan As well as receiving a money prize, artists who won the award also had the opportunity
of designing a series of espresso coffee cups for a future edition of the illy Art Collection.
